Journal Watch 7/9/09 – GP or not GP?

Mrs DundeeChest gets all the GP journals and papers.  Today’s is “GP”.

Does body shape affect asthma risk? Apple-shaped women with waists bigger than 88 cm (35 inches in old money) are at higher risk of developing asthma, even if their weight is normal.  Waist circumference is a more accurate measure of obesity than BMI, the article suggests.  Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation suggest that the data are reliable, and ‘reinforces the need for women to lead a healthy lifestyle and be more aware of the health risks of a large waist size’.

Pear shaped, apple shaped… It seems that being overweight in any body shape is bad for you in some way.  Hardly news to DundeeChest – one day we must audit the BMI of patients referred to the clinic with “Unexplained breathlessness”.
